Confirmation

Confirmation completes and confirms the Sacrament of Baptism. At Confirmation, a person receives a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, just as the Apostles received at Pentecost.

Confirmation is conferred only once, and in the Ballarat Diocese it is usually received at the age of discretion (7 or 8 years old). At Confirmation, the bishop or his delegated priest lays hands on the candidate and then prays a prayer of consecration. After the laying of hands, the candidate is anointed on the forehead with Sacred Chrism (a mixture of olive oil and basalm consecrated by the bishop) with the words, “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

The confirmed Christian is more deeply bound to Christ and to his Church, and they are given special strength to witness to the Christian faith.
